Supporting your Career Development

Supporting your Career Development

Our vision is to create a single marketplace where colleagues employed in one of the organisations that make up the GLA family can search for new career opportunities. The GLA family employs tens of thousands of people, all dedicated to serving London in one way or another.

Two of the main ways you can access this support are through the Mentoring Programme and the Talent Portal.

Mentoring Programme

The GLA Group Mentoring Programme helps people find a mentor to support their professional and career development. You can sign up to be a mentor, a mentee, or both.

Secondment FAQs

  • An external secondment is an arrangement where an employee works in an alternative organisation for a set period of time to gain new experience or learning. It is not a permanent arrangement; however, the length of time can vary (typically between 6-18 months). It is a temporary transfer to another position secured by an interim agreement.

  • Secondment opportunities posted here are open to all GLA Group employees unless otherwise stated. Applicants usually need to gain permission to be released from their permanent role, and are advised to check their own organisational rules, prior to applying. Secondments are not open to temporary staff

  • It is normal practice to seek your manager’s permission before applying for a secondment.  You may be asked this during any selection process.

  • You must get permission from your manager to apply for a secondment.  It is unlikely that this would be agreed if your employment is due to end during the term of the secondment.  Your employment contract remains with your ‘employing’ organisation.  If your employment concludes you would need to leave your secondment.

  • Each host organisation will decide their own appropriate selection method dependent on the development opportunity available.

  • While on secondment, individuals retain their existing terms and conditions and continue to be employed by their substantive employer. The hosting company will invoice the employee for the costs. The terms of this will be agreed upon as part of the secondment arrangements

  • The duties undertaken during a secondment should be broadly outlined in the job description and subsequently agreed by the parties during the secondment.  A ‘Personal Secondee Schedule’ should be completed ahead of the secondment outlining the key duties, locations, hours, working pattern, and salary details.

  • The salary for the role will be included in the advert.

  • Secondments are normally anywhere between 6 months to no-more than two years.

  • Use the link in the advert to apply direct to the ‘Host’ organisation.

  • Giving some thought to what you want to achieve, your objectives, and what you hope to learn from a secondment is really important to making it a success and adding to your career progression. The ‘Career Development and Mentoring’ section has tools to help you make the most of your secondment.

  • Participants have a duty to remain in contact with their permanent employer. Frequency will be agreed locally and all absences must be communicated to both the host and permanent employer for recording purposes.
